Book Description

Preface

First three volumes of the Alphabetical Catalogue of Manuscripts were published in between 1972-74. But due to rapid rise in number of manuscripts during 1975 to 1979 it was felt necessary to prepare a supplement of the volumes which is now presented to learned scholars for reference.

In the first three volumes i. e. Alphabetical catalogue of Oriya and other manuscripts, Alphabetical catalogue of Sanskrit, Part I and II, manuscripts were dealt with categorically in different sections. In this present volume, we have added manuscripts to different sections as follows-

Veda-53, Tantra-126, Sanskrit Purana-96, Dharma-Sastra-346, Darsana-52, Jyotisa-143, Ayurveda-82, Oriya Purana-334, Oriya Kavya-586, Oriya Prose Literature-92, Oriya Historical, Kavya-54, Paper Mss-1173, Devanagari (Hindi)-125, Bengali-103, Telgu-5, Abhidhana 35, Vyakarana-33, Sanskrit Kavya-141, Alankara-14, Music-15, Silpa Sastra-15, Ganita-18, Sanskrit Paper manuscripts-35, Bengali Sanskrit-24, Exhibits-159.

The important collections out of 3864 newly added manuscripts as detailed in the preceding paragraph are given here.

ORIYA PURANA

It is the second highest section of our collection. The number of manuscripts added as mentioned in the carlier volumes are quite encouraging. The Puranas written by Oriya writers are different from the Puranas of other languages. The Oriya works are full of Odissi style of writing. Their description and story telling have got originality though based on Sanskrit Puranas.

The following are the important manuscripts of the newly added collections-

1. Adhyatma Ramayana by Minaketana Dasa. 2 Astadasa Purana by Saranga Dasa, 3-Ekadasi Mahatmya by Hari Dasa, 4-Purusottama Mahatmya by Jagannatha Dasa, 5-Moksa Purana by Madhava Dasa, 6-Vilaika Ramayana by Harihara Dasa, 7-Siva Purana by Dina Gopinatha, 8-Saptakanda Ramayana by Siddhe-svara Dasa, 9-Hari Purana by Daivajña Padmanabha 10-Ksetra Mahatmya by Dvijacandra.

Of the above mentioned manuscripts, Saptakanda Ramayana by Siddhesvar Dasa is most important one. It is accepted by the scholars that Siddhesvara Dasa is poetic name of Sarala Dasa, the Great Oriya poet of 15th century. Vilaika Ramayana, Chandi Purana and Mahabharata of Sarala Dasa are published so far. But Vichitra Bharata by Siddhesvara Dasa which is published recently is far from style and descriptive approach of Sarala Dasa as available in his other works. Two Sapta-kanda Ramayanas bearing Nos-OrP-1431 and OrP-1432 are collected by the Orissa State Museum from Bhogarai area in the Dist. of Balasore. It is a unique work of Sarala Dasa. It consists of all the Kandas of Ramayana and has got similar type of style and descriptions as noticed in other works of Sarala Dasa.

He has beautified the work by nartating different attractive stories, activities of different deities, ghosts and demons. His style of story telling is so unique that one can not differentiate it unless goes through the origihal Sanskrit Ramayana. Hence, it is the work of Sarala Dasa although mentioned as Siddhesvara Dasa in all the chapters of the manuscript.

ORIYA LITERATURE

It is the largest section of our collection. We are proud to note that about 3000 manuscript pieces which may number about 9000 are included in Oriya literature. The following are the important manuscripts of the collections added to this volume. They are Ichhavati by Hari Dasa.
