Preface
Vol-I
Ayurveda is the science of life. Since the time immemorial, Ayurveda has been showing the ideal way of living, which promises a disease free, happy and long life. All branches of Ayurveda have depth of knowledge in concise form. Elaborating the ideas and basic principles of Ayurveda is the need of the present era. Shalya tantra is the prime branch of Ayurveda which is rich in many aspects.

Ayurveda, an ancient and time tested knowledge of medicine, gained over trial and error over thousands of years, is a very comprehensive system; based on a holistic medicinal approach that has its roots in Vedic Culture. Ayurveda is not only a system of medicine but it also represents a way of healthy living.

The focus of Ayurveda is to integrate and balance the body, mind, and spirit, rather than focusing on individual symptoms. We can even get miraculous results for some of the dreadful diseases through Ayurveda.

In the ancient India, surgery was principally pioneered by Ayurveda. Shalya Chikitsa is a significant branch of Ayurveda science; it is best suited, when the problem is beyond just medicinal repair. Acharya Susruta is synonymous with shalya tantra. His conceptions of anatomy, physiopathology and therapeutic strategies were of unparalleled brilliance, considering the early age in the history of mankind with no supportive knowledge base preceding his era. Acharya Susruta was the first medical man who advocated and brought into practice the dissection of human cadavers by the students of surgery.

Susruta Samhita comprises vast description of different parts of the body, muscles, bones, blood vessels, tissues, wound care, studies of fetus in womb and manipulating cases of obstructed labour and various surgical and para surgical procedures and techniques. This reflects the sound knowledge of surgeons of that era.

But unfortunately the most of parts of these ancient Samhita are missing or modified in later ages. Many aspects of ancient shalya tantra are inappropriate for present era. I have tried to simplify the shalya tantra concepts for students of under graduation. I have also made efforts to make correlations between Ayurveda and modern nomenclature.

Present book is based on CCIM new syllabus of under graduation. In this book I have tried to approach of incorporating both Ayurveda as well as the modern outlook of every possible surgical condition and latest advances of modern surgical practice.

I will be very grateful if readers can please write to me their opinions and suggestions about this book. Despite being meticulous, I am sure that there will be plenty of mistakes in this book. I request the students and all the readers to point them unhesitatingly so that I can improve them.

Vol-II
Over the time, while teaching the students of shalya tanatra, I realized that none of the currently available syllabus text book covers the syllabus of both Ayurveda and modern shalya tantra. Most of the modern surgery books are written with an orientation for the developed countries.

Being constantly insisted by my favourite students, I ultimately decided to write a comprehensive text book of shalya tantra. It is an effort to provide an easy and practically oriented complete text book to the students. A textbook should be easy to read and it should be short enough to be completed in a few days, that's why this book is written in very easy language and I haven't attempted to provide an encyclopaedia of surgery. I intentionally limit the length of each section, so that it can reasonably be readable.

Efforts have been made to simplify the concepts of shalya tantra by modern correlations and scientific clarifications.

Present book is based on CCIM new syllabus of under graduation. In this book I have tried to approach of incorporating both Ayurveda as well as the modern outlook of every possible surgical condition and latest advances of modern surgical practice.

This book is primarily for the undergraduates but should be helpful for post-graduate scholars. I never consider that this is an ideal textbook of shalya tantra but an effort has been made to break the mould.

Salient features of book

• Each chapter begins with key features of the chapter.

• Applied anatomy is quite relevant to the related chapter.

• The test is comprehensive and up to date.

• Important segments are put in box to highlight. • The text is illustrated with plenty of diagrams, charts and tables.

• Operative procedures are described by step to step which is unique feature of this book.

• Point to point description - Maximum efforts have been made to avoid long paragraph writing.

It will give me immense cheer and excitement, if reader writes me their valuable suggestions and opinions. I request to every reader to point out any mistake so that it could be resolved and improved in the next edition.

On the gracious occasion of the completion of this work I wish to bow my hand and salute with at most reverence to absolute, ultimate and supreme power God because without blessings of that supreme power this task would have never been possible.

I would like to express my heartily thanks to my family and all the students whose inspiration has made this ordinary work seem extraordinary.
