The reference of word 'Dravya' is found in Vedas particularly Rigveda and Atharvaveda.
The usage of dravyas and their important formulation are narrated in Samhita, later the Nighantu make the important contributions by describing various dravyas with their Synonyms, Botanical description, Therapeutic uses, Controversial aspects etc. Dravyaguna sastra was not at all included in eight branches of Ayurveda prior to Rajnighantu. During olden days' therapeutic uses of Dravyas (Herbal drugs) was assumed on the basis of drug appearance. Based on the drug look and appearance, drug is selected or choose to treat diseases of particular body part. Fore.g. Walnut appears like the Human brain, so it is taken as excellent brain food. Kanchanar patra resembles like Thyroid gland, so it is used to cure thyroid related diseases. The seeds of Kappikacchu appears like testis, hence it is used as a potent Aphrodisiac. During 14th century AD, Narahari pandita of Rajnighantu has mentioned seven important criteria for Dravya namakarna or Nomenclature of drug for systematic naming of the plants.
