The authors have jointly worked on another book named "Colour Atlas of Medicinal Plants" published in 2006.
The field of pharmacognosy has well advanced in the past centuries. Natural products from the medicinal plant source are the main cast of modern drugs in clinical use.
Pharmacognosy has multidisciplinary characters i.e. to identify the drugs, its origin, morphology, and microscopic studies, to determine the quality of the drug, its chemical compositions, therapeutic effects, etc. Pharmacognosy also develops method of control, to identify the plant products and to understand about the side effects and interactions with other drugs, etc.
Our efforts are made to provide easy and detailed guidelines to students of pharmacy and inter-disciplinary branches. The present book is of great interest as it has a detailed collection of all the drugs and various chapters mentioned in various syllabuses followed throughout the country. It can be a solution for both degree and diploma students of various universities in referring to a range of topics which would be exclusive and will provide them the useful information during their course. Some of the topics mentioned in various syllabuses might not be covered this time but we shall fulfill all the requirements in our next edition.
The modern pharmacognosy has made a foundation for great achievements on the systematic approach of standardization of crude drugs and also in the development of herbs with great therapeutic and clinical value.
As the importance of pharmacognosy continues to increase day by day, this book worked out by the timely effort of Mr. E. Edwin Jarald and Mrs. Sheeja Edwin Jarald is a welcome addition to the available guides in this subject. The present work should be of great interest to all students in all levels and also to all teachers and researchers in the field of natural products.
The authors have retained the well tried classical approach and have succeeded in placing their own touch in its arrangement.
