Preface
DURING the Gentenary Year of the Indian Section of the Theosophical Society a large number of publications have been released in different langu ages. They broadly fall into two groups. First, booklets and pamphlets for wide circulation among enquirers and seekers, and there is such a large number of them that one is reminded of the say ing of St. Mathew, 'The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few. Second, bigger books for more detailed study. The first of this kind was In Honour of Dr. Annie Besant, Lectures delivered by Eminent Persons. It was released by His Holiness The Dalai Lama on the eve of the Centenary Convention. There seems to be a great need for a book which will help members at large and others to have a clearer perception about what Theosophy is and what is the work of the Theosophical Society. With-out such a clarity the Movement which has been inspired by the Great Ones will lose its direction. Theosophy, whose literal meaning is Brahma-Jnana, has nowhere been defined because just like expres-sions Truth, Love, Beauty etc. it also cannot be confined within the frame work of words. Similarly, the work of the Society is so multi-facetted yet definite, like a beautiful diamond that none can see all the facets at the same time. In spite of these difficulties the general membership cannot be left in the lurch. With a view to help in proper understanding the present compilation on Theosophy and the Theosophical Society has been pre-pared for consideration of those interested. It has articles culled from the writings of several eminent Theosophists who have inspired, and continue to inspire many. They have thrown light from differ-ent angles and this very fact makes the study of this book worthwhile. Grateful thanks of the Indian Section first and foremost go to Smt. Radha Burnier, the Inter-national President of the Society not only for her help in editorial work but also in seeing it through the press. Sri Surendra Narayan, the International Vice-President and Dr. R. K. Banerji helped in the selection of the articles, Sri S. Raman corrected the proofs and the Manager of the Vasanta Press and his staff carefully got it printed on time. We record our appreciative thanks to them all.
