Book Description
Preface
Ladakh, during olden days, was one of the main trading center. of Central Asia. During 2nd Century A.D. traders from China carried their silk goods via Gilgit to Kashmir. Some of them came to Leh and used to exchange their goods with the Kashmir traders. During Mughal period, trade through land routes was very much popular in India. In Ladakh during this period trader, from Yarkand, Turkistan came to Leh, which was the main market in Ladakh and displayed their goods to main market during summer's season, and they had to exchange their goods. During the beginning of 18th Century, keeping in view the importance of trade activities in Leh and Kashmir, the British Government appointed their Representatives as Wazir-I-Wazarat and British Commissioner to supervise the trade. The present volume is the outcome of detailed study of inter- regional and international trade through Ladakh to central Asian countries. I have endeavored to sum up all the trade tools concerned at one place and tried to highlight the process of foreign exchange that was incurred through the Joint Commissioners. I have also taken statistical records of revenue that Jammu-Kashmir received through trade. Besides the local and internal trade, chapters related to trade routes, duties, trade fairs, trade missions, modes of transports etc. are also included for the interest of research scholar. 1 thank to Dr Tashi Paljor, Principal, Shri Tsering Mutup, A.O., Shri Abdul Ghani Sheikh, Shri Norboo Tsering, Principal, T.C.V.
