It is indeed gratifying that the book has witnessed several editions earlier and is now entering the next edition once again to provide more com-prehensive understanding of the subject. This new edition of the book has undergone a major metamorphosis. Each section has been thoroughly re-vised and several have been entirely re-written for better understanding. The text itself has been extensively changed and updated with inclusion of a new section on "Practical Case taking". Many of the changes of the book have followed from the helpful criticisms and suggestions of teachers and students both national and international.
The introduction of colour into the book has not only made it appealing to the eye but, more importantly, allowed the illustrations, diagrams and text to be more readily understood by the reader.
The book is aimed principally at undergraduates. However, many posts graduate students will find that it will complement and guide them more specialist reading.
My appreciation is extended to all the colleagues of National Institute of Homoeopathy, to my clinical and research fellows, Interns and postgraduate students who have contributed to my intellectual life. I owe a special debt of gratitude to students of all categories for whom this book is written. Learning represents a joy of discovery shared between the student and the teacher, and it is in this spirit that this book was written. The book is a product of conversations that I have had with every student I have met. It is the questions they ask in the lecture hall, and the clinic and at the bedside that have provided me with the incentive to write.
I wish also to thank Sri Prabir Ghosh for the diligent computer setting of the entire manuscript.
Finally, I wish to express my thanks to Mr. Arunava Sen, Director of Books & Allied (P) Ltd. and New Central Book Agency (P) Ltd. for his support, suggestions, and inspiration during the lengthy preparation of this fifth revision and taking the responsibility of its marketing.
It is hoped that the book will continue to serve the interest of the students, both undergraduate and postgraduate students, teachers and practitioners, as done before.
