Dr. V.I. Subramoniam, former Professor and Head, Department of Linguistics, University of Kerala and founder of the Dravidian Linguistic Association of India and its allied institutions like International School of Dravidian Linguistics, International Journal of Dravidian Linguistics and DLA News was a luminary in Dravidian Linguistics. He was the first Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Thanjavur and the first Pro-Chancellor of Dravidian University, Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh. He continued as the Chief Editor of IJDL and the Hon. Director of DLA/ISDL till his demise in 2009. Under his guidance and leadership, ISDL Campus at Menamkulam became a centre of excellence in its true sense with establishments like Publication Unit, Central Library, Bengali Unit and Tribal Block. His unexpected death in 2009 was a huge loss to Indian Linguistics and to Dravidian Studies in particular.
In 2012, DLA printed a profile of Dr. V.I. Subramoniam under the editorship of T.P. Sankarankutty Nair. Due to some technical reasons, this could not be released. An editorial committee comprising Naduvattom Gopalakrishnan, T.P. Sankarankutty Nair and C.S. Hariharan (son-in-law of late V.I.S.) was constituted in 2019 to edit the reminiscences already collected along with a few more write-ups on V.I. Subramoniam obtained after the printing of the earlier one. This book is the outcome of their commendable effort.
I sincerely thank the members of the Executive Committee of the DLA for giving sanction to publish this book 'Tributes of Love and Affection: Reminiscences of Professor V.I. Subramoniam'.
