Tulu is one of the Dravidian languages. Though it is considered as little known language, among the South Indian literary languages like Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam, Tulu stands in fifth position. So all these five languages are called as 'Pancha Dravida languages'. In modern days, scholars and research scholars show much interest to learn Tulu language. Prof. V.I. Subramoniam who was chief exponent of cognate language teaching method was very much interested in Tulu language. He had asked me to prepare teaching material on Tulu as extension of cognate languages teaching materials. For teaching cognate languages like Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam, teaching materials already prepared and several experimental courses were conducted to F.A.C.T. officers, L.A.S. officers, differently motivated adults and 9th and 10th class students. I was engaging classes in Kannada not only in these experimental classes but to M.A. Linguistics students for several years. With this experience, I have decided to prepare Teaching materials in Tulu.
While preparing teaching materials to Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada, the newspaper languages were used. Since there is no newspaper in Tulu, I used common peoples' Tulu for preparing Teaching materials in Tulu. There are one or two monthly magazines in Tulu by making use of Kannada script. At the end of these teaching materials, two lessons are prepared by taking two parts from the Tulu monthly magazines as a sample where we can see some variations in words used. All the other lessons' contents are almost similar to the materials used in cognate method teaching materials.
As a token of respect, I dedicate this book to my beloved Teacher Prof. V.L. Subramoniam.
