Book Description
About the book

The Bangladesh Liberation War was nearing its bloody end when Colonel Ashok Tara, then a twenty-nine-year-old major, was assigned the task of rescuing "Bangabandhu' Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's family being held hostage by the Pakistan Army. Ashok Tara, unarmed, entered the lion's den and negotiated with the hostile soldiers for the safe release of the family that included a young Sheikh Hasina.

The Lone Wolf is Ashok Tara's story, charting the course of his celebrated yet quiet life as a member of the armed forces. Neha Dwivedi's writing expertly captures the hero's humble beginnings and his life-altering experiences, and offers a blow-by-blow account of a seminal event in South Asian history. As much as it is the story of Colonel Ashok Tara's bravery, it is also the story of a bleak-yet-victorious period in Bangladesh's quest for freedom.

About the Author

Neha Dwivedi, a Kargil war martyr's daughter, is a doctor by profession and writer by passion. She is an alumna of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, and Lady Hardinge Medical College, Delhi. She sought solace and found her strength in writing post her father's martyrdom.

She now lives in Delhi, where she works as a childbirth educator and an infant and young child feeding specialist. She deeply believes in the healing and inspirational power of stories. Her first book was Vijyant at Kargil: The Biography of a War Hero.

Foreword

I feel grateful to Dr Neha Dwivedi for bringing the life of Colonel Ashok Tara, VrC, to centre stage. This is the man who rescued Sheikh Hasina and the family of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from certain death at the hands of the Pakistan Army during the Indo-Pak war of 1971.

Every citizen of India and Bangladesh needs to know about the stellar part this brave officer played. His act of supreme courage and strong mental focus not only saved the lives of the family members of 'Bangabandhu' Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, but also cemented the relationship between India and Bangladesh, and took it to new heights.

The book highlights the issues of 'fear' and 'courage', which are two sides of the same coin. Courage is the antithesis of fear, and Ashok Tara, through his attitude and behaviour, proved that fear originates in the mind and it is there that it needs to be destroyed. The book highlights how at the age of nine, Ashok Tara, while walking through a forested area, came face to face with a snarling wolf. Inspired and motivated by his grandfather, a shikari, he stood his ground and made the wolf back off.
