About the Author Vedantavidwan Dr. N. S. Anantha Rangacharya (b.1919) graduated from the University of Mysore with B.A. (Hons). in Sankrit (1940) and obtained B.T. degree from the same university. He became Vidwan in Vishishtadwaitha philosophy in 1956. The University of Mysore conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Philosophy for his theais 'The philosopy of Sadhana in Vishishta-dwaita in 1963. He served in various capacities in the Department of Public Instruction of erstwhile State of Mysore and then, Karnataka. He retired as the Deputy Director, Department of Kannada and Culture in 1974. He conducted and organised study circles in Vedanta Philosophy in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore Kendra for more than two decades. History of Vedic Literature, Rigveda Ratna Samputa, Nirukta, Ramanuja Darshana are some of his major works. He has translated Sri Ramanujacharya's Geetha Bhasya and Nammalwar's Divyaprabandham into Kannada. His works number more than a hundred. This book 'Upanishats' is the first in a series of ten books called 'Sanskrite for the young'.

Preface The Upanishats enshrine the supreme knowledge of the Reality, gaining which man attains peace and tranquility. They deal directly with the most intricate and profound problems such as purpose of human life, the goal of human life and the means of attainment of spiritual perfection. Here we come across earnest seekers of truth like Sathyakama, Upakosala, Svetaketu, Narada and others as well as compassionate and celebrated teachers like Uddalaka, Shandilya, Yajnavalkya, Sanatkumara and others. One experiences the immediate presence of the pious and holy sages in a calm and peaceful environment. The utter simplicity and unassuming nature of the seers that realised divinity in everything and who led a calm and contented life inspires all that come into contact with them. I am grateful to the authorities of the Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for giving me an opportunity to present this collection of Mantras from the upanishats with translation originally in Kannada and now in English.
