About the Book The book explores the Vedic Law of Marriage, focusing on women's emancipation. Chapter 1 examines the Vedic perspective on marriage. Chapter 2 presents an alternative version of the Vedic Law of Marriage, followed by analysis. Chapter 3 discusses the conflict between Smriti and Shruti regarding marriage laws, including viewpoints on the marriageable age of girls according to Mann and Parashara. Criticisms and responses regarding interpretations of marriage laws are also addressed. Overall, the book offers a detailed exploration of ancient marriage customs, perspectives, and conflicts, with a particular emphasis on women's liberation within this framework.

About the Author Alladi Mahadeva Sastry (1861-1926), hailing from Nayudupeta, Andhra Pradesh, was a trailblazer in Indian scholarship. As the inaugural curator of the Oriental Library since its inception in 1891, he laid the foundation for scholarly endeavors. Proficient in Telugu, Sanskrit, and Vedic traditions, he earned acclaim for his academic prowess, graduating from Presidency College, Madras, in 1883. Noteworthy is Swami Vivekananda's endorsement of his insightful work on Sri Shankaracharya's teachings.

Preface MARRIAGE is a social institution of such vital importance that a nation's ideals of marriage and married life have a direct bearing on its well-being and progress or the reverse. The truth of this proposition is well borne out by the history of the Indo-Aryans. The vicissitudes of their long and hoary civilization can be traced to the gradual changes in their ideals of marriage and married life and in the status assigned to woman in society. Three important stages with reference to the laws of marriage and the status of woman may be distinguished in the history of the Indo-Aryan civilization as revealed in the extant literature.
