Early newspapers during the 1950s and 60s usually carried news items on murders, accidents, riots, etc.; today's news-papers also feature the same items but with additional news under the headings 'murder of environment', 'industrial accident', 'death toll due to outbreaks of cholera and typhoid', etc. One may ask what happened during the intermittent period of 30 or 40 years? Well, scientific developments made stupendous strides and technology advanced to scale new heights. For this the human race cannot but be ever grateful because without technology growth, industrial progress and overall development may have remained a mere dream. However, there is another aspect to this development, and that is the resultant pollution.
We agree pollution is concomitant to development, but not to this extent! Not at the cost of human health! Pollution has to remain within tolerable limits. It cannot be allowed to endanger our planet. While people in developed countries are getting more and more aware about the consequences of pollution, the developing countries (including ours) have scant regard for it. We either take it as part of our daily life or turn a blind eye to it. This book has been written with the purpose of creating awareness about pollution and its effects on our fellow citizens. Beginning with the general nature of pollution, I try to cover as extensively as possible areas like air pollution, acid rain, pesticides, water pollution, oil slicks, solid wastes, radiation, noise and trees to conclude with an appeal, 'Save our Mother Earth', by uniting together to guard against the hazards of pollution. Detailed description of our cities, rivers and the major disasters that occurred in the recent past have been adequately covered. Some prominent disasters that occurred in other parts of the world have also been incorporated to convey the serious consequences of pollution.
The speciality of this book is that it would be useful to a layman, to students as a reference material, to teachers as a handbook for imparting knowledge on environmental problems, and as a source book to various professional associations and organisations engaged in pollution control programmes.
A number of people have rendered assistance in the preparation of this book and which I gratefully acknowledge. I would particularly like to thank Shri Murugesan for finding time to restructure this book. A special word of gratitude is due to my colleagues who helped me in all possible ways to complete this book. My thanks go to my mother Arunagiri Amma and my wife Sivabagiyam and to my son Sakthi Kumar for their patience and consistent encouragement. Lastly, it is a pleasure to express my sincere thanks to the National Book Trust, India for the keen interest shown towards the publication of this book.
