Book Description
About the Book
In war there is no prize for the runner-up. - Seneca the Younger (Roman Philosopher)

For centuries technological advances in weapons have always played a decisive role in ensuring victory in war. In military parlance, these technologically driven 'Revolutions in Military Affairs' or RMA for short, have enabled the winning sides in creating asymmetry in their favour. The very first RMA of the Iron Age in the form of spear and arrows had enabled stand-off capability, which is equally valid in today's warfare. There have been a series of such game changing technologies like the gun-powder, cannons, battle tank, submarine, bomber aircraft to name a few. Current microchip enabled technologies like robotics and autonomous weapons have added a new dimension to the ever changing nature of warfare.

Mankind has constantly sought better, faster and more lethal ways to kill and each new science and technology has brought with it advancement in weapon systems. From sword to bow and arrow to nuclear tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles and modern UAVs, each new era has impacted the art of warfare. I must therefore compliment Shri. Vivek Joshi in bringing out the importance of these weapons from prehistoric days to the modern times. The sequential changes in such weapons along with their illustrations makes it easier for the reader to relate to the decisive role played in ensuring victories.

While the book mainly focuses on the weapons that win the wars, ranging from spear to missile, the author has also included description of major weapon carriers used for mobility, such as the battle tanks, armored vehicle and bombers. In the fast paced battle scenario mobility is a key to success and has enormous effect on the conduct of war. The book also briefly describes much dreaded chemical and nuclear weapons including the effect of fusion bombs for their deterrent effect.

Introduction
What are weapons? A weapon, arm or armament is a tool or instrument used in order to inflict damage or harm to living beings-physical or mental, artificial structures or systems. In human society, weapons are used to increase the efficacy and efficiency of activation such as hunting, crime, law enforcement, and warfare. The first warriors probably used whatever weapons they could find on the ground. Sticks, stones and bones have all been used to smash, pierce, or otherwise do in an enemy.
