Book Description
About the Book
This book is a comparative study of the phenomenology of Yogācāra Vasubandhu and that of the German philosopher Edmund Husserl having the focus on the understanding of the deeply inner nature of consciousness or mind. It articulates that the Yogacăra philosophy is much richer and comprehensive than the Western phenomenology, particularly the Husserlian phenomenology. Later Vasubandhu's philosophical orientation was idealist in Indian sense or a phenomenologist in Husserlian sense. His Mahāyāna Yogācāra idealism is based on Asanga's seminal text Sandhinirmocanasūtra and his own Vijñaptimātratasiddhi (Vimśatika and Trimśikā together) along with his exploration of the intrinsic theory of consciousness or mind. For one to have a clear-cut understanding of Vasubandhu, the book follows the Husserlian phenomenological approach as a philosophical methodology and also used select terminology wherever required. This book is expected to be highly useful for students, researchers and teachers in the area of Indian/Buddhist philosophy.

Preface
THIS book is an outgrowth of my PhD thesis written under the supervision of Professor Hari Shankar Prasad in the Department of Philosophy and submitted to the University of Delhi for PhD Degree, which was awarded in 2016. Before that I had done my three years BA (Honours) and two years MA (Philosophy) courses from Kamala Nehru College of University of Delhi, but MA classes were held in the Department of Philosophy, North Campus, where I regularly attended philosophy classes, one of which was on Indian/Buddhist philosophy by Professor Prasad. His lectures were not only most impressive among all, but also his personal care for the problems of the students outside the class in respect of easy access, extra classes and supply of reading materials. But he never degraded his standard, hard work and sincerity, which the students took seriously. He would not tolerate any error in writing or diacritical marking what he had been trained by his own intolerable PhD supervisor Professor J.W. de Jong (Australian National University, Australia). This kind of discipline was certainly in the interest of the researchers themselves. Such a tough discipline suited my temperament and I decided to join Professor Prasad's MPhil course on Buddhist philosopher Vasubandhu's early text, Abhidharmakośa-Kārikā written from Sarvästivāda-Vaibhāşika points of view and his Bhāşya on it from Sauträntika points of view, and also wrote MPhil dissertation under his supervision in the same area, which was completed successfully with highest marks.
