Guru Nanak is seen here in his familiar aspect and stance of an aged, spiritual teacher-figure - the full grey beard, the saintly expression, and the slightly inclined head with the finely drawn nimbus. The cloak he wears over his body, the cap with a high flap and a domed top, the necklaces of beads, are also very familiar. An enormous bolster of fine texture is placed behind the Guru, who is seated on a carpet with highly decorative borders.

Guru Nanak sits, meditating, immersed in the thoughts of the Formless One: on a small carpet spread out on a terrace. The left leg is tucked under, and the right one is bent and brought over the left knee.
