I wanted to create an album that would be a beautiful, soulful an memorable experience in its entirely in its vocal performance, its lyrics and its music. I hope this album will be one.
The emotional core and theme of the album, as the title ‘Saari Raat’ metaphorically suggests, is the wait, the contemplation, the search and the sweet pain in the real world of love. This is consistent in all the tracks in the alum. The lyrics lend themselves to a sufi interpretation since the search and path to get to the loved one is symbolic of the pursuit and journey to the divine eternal power.
He vocals traverse as necessary to meet the emotional and musical requirements of each track- there is improvisation on combining complementing ragas, experimentation with layers of harmonies, balancing acts between soft, almost spoken tones and bass tones, and a deliberate introduction of a contrast between a Hindustani classical style rendition and a more modern, straight singing style.
The music and sound of the album is more contemporary- simple on the one hand and rich on the other, each track bringing its own distinct mood that stands out and yet blends in to fulfill its place in the overall sound of the album.
I hope that listening to the album is a reflective and enjoyable journey for you.
