Matsya is the Sanskrit word for "fish," and it also refers to the first incarnation (avatar) of the Hindu god Vishnu. In this form, Vishnu is said to have saved the first man, Manu, and the Vedas from a great deluge, or flood. He is typically depicted as either a giant fish or as a hybrid creature with a human torso and the lower body of a fish.
