Goddess Kali's dark form subsumes everything into herself, as all colours are absorbed in black. Only her devout devotees are appreciative of the idea that for all her hideous outward appearance, she is the loving mother.

Moving away from the conventional image of Devi with a garland of skulls and a girdle of human heads, the artist has attired her in colourfully designed garlands reaching up to her knees. That the great goddess can be benevolent and malevolent at the same time, is proved by the left and right sides of her. In her left hands she holds a chopper and a severed head and the right hands are in abhaya' and 'Varada mudra, giving assurance to her devotees. She wears an elaborate crown with fancy design on it. The lolling tongue makes her appearance more fearful. The inert figure on which she stands symbolizes the spirit of the dead; the energy of god is feminine and every god is static without his shakti.

This is a very typical batik work with the crackle showing to best results on the red and yellow background. The dyes that the artist has used here are bright and stark, reflecting the ominous mood of Kali, the terrible. The red in the niche brings out her burning anger, further enclosed by yellow, the colour of piety.
