A Glimpse of the Eternal

This captivating watercolor painting invites you to witness a profound scene steeped in Hindu mythology and symbolism. The artwork presents a powerful depiction of Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities of Hinduism, seated upon his loyal and devoted mount, Nandi the bull. The use of watercolors lends a soft, ethereal quality to the scene, enhancing its spiritual aura. The dimensions of this unique artwork are 15 inches in height and 11 inches in width.

The All-Auspicious One

Lord Shiva, known as the Destroyer of Evil and the Transformer, is revered throughout India and beyond. His iconography is rich with meaning. In this artwork, Shiva's blue skin symbolizes his infinite nature and his ability to consume and transmute negativity, while his third eye, often depicted on his forehead, represents wisdom and insight beyond the ordinary. The crescent moon adorning his head is symbolic of time. From his matted locks, the holy river Ganga is shown to flow. Shiva’s attire, a tiger skin, represents power and the conquering of desire. A snake is seen coiled around Nandi’s horns, which is often seen as Shiva's adornment. This captures the essence of Shiva’s potent and complex nature, a deity who embodies both destruction and creation. The trident, or Trishul, seen in the background is his weapon and represents his power over the three aspects of existence, and his protection from harm.

Nandi: The Sacred Bull

Nandi, the sacred bull, is much more than just a vehicle for Lord Shiva. He is the gatekeeper of Shiva and Parvati's abode, Mount Kailash, and is considered the embodiment of righteousness and unwavering devotion. Legend says that Nandi was originally born human, later transformed into a bull. He represents strength, virility, and the ideal devotee, always focused and dedicated to his lord. Nandi's presence signifies unwavering faith and the importance of devotion in the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment. The yellow mark, the Tripundra, on his forehead, made up of three lines and a dot is a symbol representing Shiva and is considered highly auspicious. The artist beautifully captures Nandi's steadfast gaze, reflecting his deep connection to Shiva.
