During the end of the Mughal rule, there came a decline in royal patronage. The court scenes, the hunting escapades, the portraits etc. gave way to free themes and uncommon subjects. Brilliant hues were replaced with subdued colours. However, what remained unchanged was excellent draughtsmanship and depictions imbued with naturalism.

The man represented here seems to belong to a world of spirits. He wears an uncommon kind of a hat with angular edges, and carries a leopard skin on his shoulder to spread and sit as and when he feels tired. On his waist hang a few strings and chains with tinkle bells. Also prominently seen hanging is a water casket. He is a frail man with delicate limbs which look almost feminine. He holds a plant in one hand, which perhaps has medicinal or magical value. In the other hand he holds a golden wand with a bird head at the edge. In the same hand is the delicate chain holding the collar that cups the mongoose captive. Small brush strokes and shading the animal is a feat well accomplished in the miniature. The background is pale with a rough, brown shading to imply the ground.
