“I may not own the
skill to rise
To glory’s topmost
height,
Nor win a place among
the wise,
But I can keep the
right.
And I can live my
life on earth
Contented to the end,
If but a few shall
know my worth
And proudly call me
friend.”
-Edgar
Allan Poe
The contentment of
having a few, special fellow beings to call friend, to share the mundane
experiences and lows and highs of life, is unparalleled. Even in the simplest
moments of conversations with friends, the aches and stresses of life come to a
halt, allowing companionship’s warmth to embrace us. An artist’s vision of the
simple joys of having friends is presented in this acrylic on canvas, titled
“Get Together”. Draped in traditional sarees, five women gather on the canvas,
standing with postures and hand gestures that suggest a conversation being
struck.
A harmony in
expressions, ornamentation, and features of women creates a symmetry of
elements on the canvas which is complemented by the difference in their
stances, bringing a hint of movement. In the background of this group of women
is a colonial bungalow, a common sight in towns of Southern India where
Britishers built their administrative and residential centers. A soothing green
backdrop adds to the tranquility that the artwork carries. Much like the birds
that cover their drapes, the hearts and minds of the women soar freely, in the
company of each other, thanks to the unparalleled bliss of a simple
conversation between friends.
