“Kailash Swamini”- the queen of Kailash is an ode to the Parameshwari, the primordial goddess who manifests as Parvati, Durga, Kali, and innumerable other forms, but answers to one universal call- Maa (mother)!

Adorned in the traditional attire of Eastern India, a red and white drape with paisleys all over, goddess Parvati appears in the most enchanting roopa. She has the luster of a blue gem, reminding one of her forms as Kali. Her long tresses are adorned with a crown, and a crescent moon, The red tint on her forehead highlights her potent third eye, and coryllium and aalta (red paint) beautify her delicate eyes and hands.

Sitting relaxed yet with an aura of authority, the great mother smiles gently as her beloved son Ganesha peeks from behind her, offering her a Japakusum or hibiscus flower, which according to Hindu traditions is the goddess’s favorite flower. A basket of Japakusm is placed near the goddess’s feet and a garland of the flowers ornament her form. The border of the painting too has vines of hibiscus flowers running all over, interspersed with the roaring lions of the goddess on each corner.

Hinting at the cosmic might of the goddess, her Khadag (sickle) lies on the ground and the Trishul (trident) of Shiva appears in the background, against the pristine white hilltops of Kailasha, representing the eternal presence of Shiva with Shakti.
