Many different idioms of the 'Company style' developed in different parts of India, but the term covers a single phenomenon: an attempt by Indian artists to work in a mixed Indo-European style which would appeal to the Europeans employed by various East Indian companies, hence the name.

This picture clearly shows that the Indian artist was consciously attempting to meet European demands for accurate depiction. It seems here that the artist is not only interested in formal appearances but in every aspect of the figure's personality.

A slender, lithe and willowy figure moves with a delicate sensuousness; every slight rhythm of the arms, shoulders and legs, smooth and pleasurable. She appears to be one of those rare creatures whose every breath is made for love. Keeping her figure in mind, one finds a wholesomeness here, an indulent softness of manner, voice, gesture and motion. Her movement has a captivating grace which is a delight to the senses. One is confronted by a masterpiece of the dressmakers art, designed to excite and intrigue, yet not reveal much.

The outlines of the features are drawn in a fine, neutral color. As clear and definite as it is possible for human hand and eye to make it, the line of the features in this miniature is a remarkable piece of execution. It shows the painter's complete control over his brush when delineating a face in profile. But excellent though the outline is, it is equaled by the subtle modeling of the features themselves, so essential to the life and character of the person depicted. This is obtained by delicate and carefully blended tones, applied with great precision. The artist's skill is also observed in the pose of the head, in the suggestion of the figure under the drapery but particularly in the drawing of the hands. There is a nervous, sensitive feeling in the drawing of the hands, expressing the character of the sitter.

This miniature shows how Mughal painting was gradually adjusting itself to the requirements of the Company patrons. Realistic treatment, European features, folds in the drapery etc., show marked western influences.
