Mangala is represented as a red man with four arms, riding on a sheep. He wears a red necklace and clothes of the same colour. In his four hands he holds a trident, a mace, a lotus and a spear. "If a person be born under the planet Mangala, he will be full of anxious thoughts, wounded with offensive weapons, oppressed with fears and will lost fortune and reputations". This deity is identical with Karttikeya.
As in most Madhubani paintings, the basic colours are flatly applied. The halo around the Mangala's head and his flowing cloak is painted in shimmering yellow, that provides an excellent backdrop to the red and orange. The latter two colours are also used on the black border, making it an extension of the picture itself.
