The Indian tradition is rich with goddesses. So varied are her manifestations and names that every village and every scripture, every Purana and poet create their own unique image of her. While sometimes, she is a consort at other times, she is a fertility goddess; at times she is a benevolent figure yet at others, she is horrific and malevolent.

Durga is a multivalent goddess. She is portrayed as an exquisite youthful figure with an alluring body, whose powers are represented by her multiple arms bearing weapons. She is accompanied by a powerful lion mount. This painting on silk represents Durga in her form as Singhvahini. In this form, she has four arms only and holds a sword and a shield. Dressed in red garments, she sits astride the lion. She wears an exquisite crown and jewellery adorning every part of her body, down to the toes. She has a fiery halo around her head that complements the henna adorning her hands and feet.

The fierce–looking lion is also adorned with ornaments. He looks as ferocious as his rider looks gentle. The background is in a pleasant shade of green. The artist demarcates the ground by placing some shrubs and flowers in the lower half. Ochre, black and red form the prominent colours of his palette, complemented by the cool green.
