Bhaisajyaguru: The Supreme Healer

In Tibetan Buddhism, this figure stands as a revered representation of healing and well-being. Known as the Medicine Buddha, or Bhaisajyaguru in Sanskrit, this deity embodies the power to alleviate suffering, both physical and mental. Beyond simply curing illness, the Medicine Buddha guides practitioners towards ultimate liberation, transcending the cycles of rebirth and achieving enlightenment. The image is not just a statue but a conduit for blessings and a reminder of the potential for inner and outer healing that resides within us all. This representation, often depicted in a serene meditative pose, serves as a potent symbol of compassion and skillful means. The Medicine Buddha vowed to help all sentient beings overcome physical, mental, and spiritual ailments. Devotion to the Medicine Buddha is believed to grant protection from disease, negative influences, and obstacles on the path to enlightenment.

Auspicious Iconography

Crafted in brass, this statue portrays the Medicine Buddha in his characteristic seated posture. The right hand rests on the right knee in the gesture of varada mudra (gesture of giving), often holding a myrobalan fruit (haritaki), considered the king of medicines in traditional Tibetan medicine. The left hand rests in the lap in dhyana mudra (meditation gesture), holding a bowl filled with healing nectar. Every detail is significant, from the ushnisha atop the head, representing wisdom, to the elongated earlobes, symbolizing renunciation of worldly possessions. The intricate carvings and smooth finish of the brass emphasize the qualities of purity, compassion, and healing that the Medicine Buddha embodies. Notice the detailed patterns on the monastic robes. The subtle yet captivating facial expression evokes a sense of peace and profound wisdom.

The Medicine Buddha Sutra and Mandala

The teachings related to the Medicine Buddha are contained within the "Medicine Buddha Sutra." The sutra describes his pure land in the East, known as "Pure Lapis Lazuli," a realm free from suffering and filled with radiant light. Visualizing the Medicine Buddha and reciting his mantra are common practices for cultivating healing energies and dispelling negativity. The Medicine Buddha Mandala, a complex geometric diagram, represents the deity's enlightened environment and offers a framework for meditation and healing practices. It is believed that by connecting with the Medicine Buddha, one can draw upon his vast reservoir of compassion and wisdom.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
