The image of Shakuntala in all the beauty and naked independence of youth. Shakuntala, before becoming wife of King Dushyanta and mother of Emperor Bharata, was the typical forest girl. Growing up as Sage Kanva’s daughter, forest creatures such as the deer and the bird that you see in this sculpture, were her companions.

Wound around the soft curves of Shakuntala’s form is a lengthy sprig of leaf-laden vine. Etched into the graciously sculpted Kadappa stone, they are discernible by the silvery grey colour, which accentuates the deep, natural black colour of the limestone.

The innocent creatures are feeding from the hands of Shakuntala. While they do so, she looks upon them with divine compassion. In fact, even the stance of her right hand is a divine mudra.

Embodiment of Nature's Embrace

This exquisite stone sculpture captures a profound connection between humanity and the natural world. Carved from the resilient Katappa stone, the figure stands as a testament to the enduring beauty and vitality of the earth. The intricate detailing, from the flowing lines of the hair to the delicate rendering of the vines that embrace the form, speaks to a deep reverence for life's interconnectedness. The figure's posture is one of serene grace, with a gentle gesture extended towards a fawn. This interaction evokes a sense of harmony and mutual respect, mirroring the timeless tales of forest deities and spirits who are said to commune with the creatures of the wild. In many ancient cultures, deer were seen as messengers from the spirit realm or symbols of purity and innocence, their presence a blessing upon the land and its inhabitants. The subtle curve of the figure's body, adorned with the organic patterns of leaves, further reinforces this theme, suggesting a being intrinsically woven into the fabric of the landscape. Complementing the central figure is a beautifully sculpted peacock, its plumage subtly hinted at and its presence adding a touch of regal elegance. The peacock, revered in numerous traditions for its iridescent beauty and considered the king of birds, often symbolizes auspiciousness, immortality, and pride. Its inclusion here further enriches the narrative of the sculpture, suggesting a complete ecosystem of natural splendor and divine guardianship. The craftsmanship of this piece is truly remarkable. The stone has been worked with a skill that brings out its inherent textures and depths, creating a visual and tactile experience that is both powerful and refined. The pose of the figure, with one hand offering a leaf to the fawn, is a powerful symbol of nurturing and care. It suggests a universal mother figure, a representation of the earth itself, providing sustenance and protection to all her children. The other hand, raised in a gesture of blessing or offering, adds to the spiritual aura of the piece, inviting contemplation on the divine forces that govern the natural world. This sculpture is more than just a decorative object; it is a symbol of the sacred bond that exists between all living things. It serves as a beautiful reminder of our place within the grand tapestry of nature and the importance of honoring and protecting it. Whether placed in a garden, a meditation space, or as a focal point in your living area, this captivating piece will undoubtedly inspire a sense of peace, wonder, and connection to the elemental forces that shape our world. Its classic aesthetic and profound meaning make it a cherished addition to any home or collection. ––––––––––

A Touch of the Sacred Geometry

Visible in the upper corner of the presentation is a symbol that resonates with deep spiritual and cosmological significance. This is the "Bhuvaneshwari Yantra," a sacred geometric diagram revered in Tantric traditions and Hinduism. The Bhuvaneshwari Yantra is associated with the divine mother goddess, Bhuvaneshwari, who is the queen of the universe and the embodiment of cosmic energy. Its intricate design, with radiating petals and concentric squares, represents the creation and dissolution of the cosmos, the order and harmony of the universe, and the ultimate source of all power and existence. Its presence alongside the nature-infused sculpture suggests an underlying universal order, where the beauty of the natural world is a manifestation of this divine geometric blueprint. This symbol imbues the entire piece with a layer of sacredness, inviting viewers to connect with the deeper, often unseen, structures of reality and the divine feminine energy that permeates all creation.
