His hands are in Anjali Mudra and his feet are shaped like the feet of a tiger, the bewildering saint in this bronze is Vyaghrapada (he who has the pada or feet of a Vyaghra or tiger).

According to the Tamil legends, the saint was responsible for collecting sacred flowers for Shiva at the Chidambaram temple. One day, during his task, he was stung by bees, and his legs were injured.

To soothe the pain of his devotee, Shiva bestowed on him the legs of a tiger, with which Vyaghrapada was given speed and strength.

Due to his spirit of self-sacrifice, Vyaghrapada is one of the closest devotees of Chidambaram Shiva, appearing in the iconography visible in this bronze, in the images of Shiva performing his divine Ananda-Tandava (dance of bliss).

A Vision in Bronze: Honoring a Shaiva Saint

Behold a finely crafted bronze statue, a devotional representation of a revered Nayanar saint. Standing approximately 12.3 inches tall, this piece captures the essence of piety and dedication. Cast using traditional methods, the bronze radiates a subtle warmth, its surface bearing the gentle patina of time – a testament to the enduring nature of faith and artistry. With dimensions of 4.5 x 4.5 inches, this statue serves as an ideal addition to your sacred space. The statue's posture is one of reverence, hands folded in the Anjali Mudra, a gesture of respect, devotion, and greeting. The saint's gaze is directed forward, conveying serenity and inner peace. Every detail, from the carefully rendered facial features to the subtle folds in the garments, contributes to the overall sense of spiritual presence.

Vyaghrapada: The Tiger-Footed Ascetic

This particular Nayanar saint is believed to be Vyaghrapada, the "tiger-footed one". According to legend, Vyaghrapada was a great devotee of Shiva. He desired to climb trees easily in order to collect flowers for Shiva's worship before the bees could reach them. He prayed to Shiva for the feet of a tiger so that he could do this with ease. Shiva granted his wish, giving him the ability to scale the tallest trees with tiger-like claws. Vyaghrapada dedicated his life to gathering flowers for Shiva's daily puja (worship), becoming an embodiment of unwavering devotion. The markings on the lower half of the statue are indicative of his tiger legs. His story resonates deeply with themes of dedication and divine grace. Vyaghrapada represents the unwavering commitment of a devotee and the transformative power of faith. The statue, crafted with reverence, embodies these qualities. The statue is clad in minimal garments, reflecting the ascetic lifestyle of the Nayanars, and wears traditional arm bands and ear ornamentation.

Panchaloha Craftsmanship: Enduring Beauty

This piece falls under the category of bronze (Panchaloha) statues, signifying its creation using a traditional metal alloy. Panchaloha, meaning "five metals," is a combination of copper, zinc, tin, gold, and silver. This combination is believed to imbue the statue with spiritual properties, enhance its durability, and lend it a unique luster that deepens over time. The use of Panchaloha ensures that the statue not only serves as a beautiful art piece but also as a sacred object that can be cherished for generations. This statue is more than just an art piece; it's a touchstone to ancient stories, unwavering faith, and exquisite craftsmanship. Bring the blessings of the Nayanars and the artistry of Panchaloha into your home with this divine representation.
