Shiva, the most powerful in Hindu religion is one among the trio of supreme Gods namely Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and is responsible for the creation, reproduction and dissolution of everything. He is not only a Hindu god but the first yogi and guru. Hence, he is also called “Adiyogi” or “Adiguru”.
This brass sculpture is the depiction of calmness, awareness and contentment. The artificer defines the face very explicitly; the satisfactory smile due to Padmasana and the third eye, if open, can cause havoc on earth. The dense hair spiraling upwards and at the top is the uncontrollable Ganga, tamed by Shiva. Shiva is mostly seen wearing a rudraksha mala and the creativity of the artist can’t be ignored where he dresses Shiva with three rudraksha malas in his neck, one on each wrist as a bracelet and a double layered bicep bracelet cuff made out of it. Other jewels that this Shiva’s idol has are the snakes with their prominent snake hoods; one in his neck has inlaid stones on its hood and how beautifully the striations are carved. This art looks better than any other jewellery, while the one on his head is coiled around the matted hair and adds glamour to it.
The final touch is Shiva in Abhay mudra and the iconicity in which he meditates on the tiger mat that is placed on the Kailash Mountain. A thing to be noted here is that, how finely the base of the sculpture has been carved in the rock shaped mountain.
