Kubera or Jambhala in Buddhist tradition is a warrior king and protector of the North, who bestows worldly treasures on his devotees. His protective and fierce gaze guards the people of the Himalayan region from disasters of daily and spiritual life. This beautiful copper statue from Nepal presents Lord of North, Kubera in his characteristic form, sitting on a lotus throne in the royal Maharajalalisana, extending one leg forward, placed on a smaller lotus. He wears an ornate crown with floral and conch motifs, earrings, beaded necklaces, waistcloth, and a dhoti highlighted by the rustic hue of brown and gold outlines.

The expressions of Kubera are animated by his large eyes, with hints of red, extended eyebrows, and mustache with brilliant red lips. In his right hand, he holds a conch and, in his left, he has the mongoose who spits jewels, creating a miniature hill of gems on the lotus throne. Another conch is placed in front of Kubera’s extended foot. Shankha or conch is a symbol of auspiciousness in Buddhism, also used as a representative of Kubera’s wife, whose residence was the ocean, where conches are found in abundance.

Kubera: Lord of Wealth and Guardian of the North

Behold a magnificent representation of Kubera, the Lord of Wealth and Prosperity, meticulously crafted by skilled artisans in Nepal. This striking idol embodies Kubera's powerful presence and auspicious blessings, radiating abundance and good fortune. In both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, Kubera holds a prominent position as the treasurer of the gods and the guardian of the northern direction. His devotees seek his blessings for financial stability, material wealth, and overall prosperity. Kubera, also known as Jambhala in Tibetan Buddhism, is often depicted adorned with jewels and precious ornaments, symbolizing his divine association with riches. The iconography of Kubera often includes a pot of jewels or a mongoose, both symbols of wealth and prosperity. The mongoose, particularly, is believed to spit out jewels, further reinforcing Kubera’s connection to abundant riches. Stories recount Kubera's past lives and the karma he accumulated to attain his divine status. His devotion and austerities are said to have pleased Lord Shiva, who granted him the position of the guardian of wealth. Kubera's influence extends beyond mere material gain; he also represents the wise and responsible management of wealth, encouraging generosity and compassion.

Artistry and Devotion

The creation of this idol is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Nepal, where craftsmanship is intertwined with deep spiritual devotion. The use of copper as the base metal signifies purity and conductivity, believed to channel the divine energy of Kubera. The meticulous gilding with gold elevates the idol to a state of exquisite beauty and reverence, highlighting Kubera's divine status and the precious nature of his blessings. Gold, revered across cultures for its inherent value and symbolic association with enlightenment, perfectly complements Kubera's role as the bestower of wealth. Every detail, from the intricate adornments to the serene expression on Kubera’s face, reflects the artist's dedication to capturing the essence of this revered deity. The lotus base upon which Kubera sits is symbolic of purity, spiritual awakening, and detachment from the material world. This carefully considered detail adds depth to the statue, connecting it with the fundamental teachings of Buddhism. The flowing robes and elaborate crown are rendered with remarkable precision, demonstrating the mastery of the Nepalese artisans. Owning this idol is not merely acquiring an art piece; it is embracing the blessings of Kubera and inviting prosperity into your life.
