The Awakened One

This finely crafted brass statue depicts Lord Buddha in a state of serene contemplation. The hands are positioned in the lap, holding the Pinda-Patra, the alms bowl. This gesture symbolizes the Buddha's renunciation of worldly possessions and his reliance on the generosity of others for sustenance during his years of ascetic practice and teaching. The peaceful expression on Buddha's face reflects the inner tranquility achieved through enlightenment. The long earlobes, a traditional mark of his prior princely life and subsequent detachment, gently frame his face. The ushnisha, the cranial protuberance on the top of his head, represents his heightened wisdom and spiritual attainment.

A Symphony in Brass and Inlay

The statue is fashioned from high-quality brass, its surface polished to a soft, golden sheen. The drapery is adorned with an intricate inlay work. This decorative technique involves carefully setting small pieces of stone or other materials into the surface of the brass, creating a mosaic-like pattern. The vibrant colors of the stones contrast beautifully with the golden hue of the brass, adding depth and visual interest to the piece. The lotus base upon which the Buddha sits is also adorned with meticulous detail, its petals unfolding in a graceful and symmetrical design.

The Alms Bowl and the Path to Enlightenment

The Pinda-Patra held by Buddha has a special significance. After Siddhartha Gautama renounced his princely life, he embraced the life of a wandering ascetic. As he journeyed seeking enlightenment, he would carry an alms bowl, relying on the generosity of the lay community for his daily sustenance. This practice not only sustained him physically but also served as a constant reminder of his dependence on others and the importance of humility. The bowl itself became a symbol of detachment and simplicity. This statue beautifully captures the essence of this story, reminding us of the Buddha's journey to enlightenment and the path of mindful living. Displaying this statue can serve as a reminder of the principles of Buddhism and the pursuit of inner peace. It is suitable for meditation spaces, home shrines, or as a decorative element in any space where tranquility and serenity are valued.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
