The androgynous or double-sexed iconography of Shiva-Parvati - Parvati is also known as Shakti, Sanskrit for primordial power - is arguably the most singular of the vast repository of Hindu iconography.

The purush (Sanskrit word for both masculine and primordial energy) and the Prakriti (Sanskrit for both female and matter) fuse into one another to project a confluence of both sexes.

Note how this exceptionally done brass sculpture does great justice to the nuances of the sexes. The broad and angular shoulder of Shiva and His flat chest; to the gentle curve of Shakti's shoulder and Her ripe, round breast. The straight transition of Shiva's waist to His hip; to the exquisite waist-to-hip ratio of Shakti.

The bare musculature of Shiva's thigh and leg, and His broad feet; to the soft curvaceous lines of Shakti's limb, discernible underneath her gracious draping, and Her superbly feminine feet. Ardhanarishvara is portrayed as playing the veena, exuding a divine melody.

Embodiment of Cosmic Union: The Ardhanarishvara

This exquisite brass statue captures the divine form of Ardhanarishvara, a potent and profound representation of the fused male and female aspects of the Supreme Being in Hinduism. Ardhanarishvara is a synthesis of Shiva, the ascetic god of destruction and transformation, and his consort Shakti, the primordial cosmic energy, the feminine power that animates the universe. This composite deity embodies the philosophical concept that the masculine and feminine are inseparable, two sides of the same coin, essential for creation and existence. The iconography of Ardhanarishvara is rich with symbolism. The right half of the deity represents Shiva, often depicted with a serene countenance, a third eye, and adorned with snakes or ash. This side embodies power, consciousness, and asceticism. The left half represents Shakti, typically depicted with a more alluring and dynamic presence, adorned with jewelry and a flowing garment. This side symbolizes creation, illusion, and the dynamic force of nature. In this particular rendition, the masterful craftsmanship of Indian artisans brings this divine union to life. The material, brass, has been meticulously shaped, imbuing the figure with a sense of permanence and gravitas. ––––––––––

A Dance of Creation and Harmony

The posture of Ardhanarishvara often depicts a dance, a celestial ballet that represents the ceaseless cosmic activity of creation, preservation, and destruction. This dance is not merely physical but also a metaphor for the interplay of forces that govern the universe. The duality is evident in the statue's form: one side may be muscular and authoritative, while the other is more delicate and graceful. The attributes held in the hands further define the divine nature of each half. This statue, through its intricate details and harmonious proportions, conveys a sense of balance and completeness. It serves as a reminder that true power lies not in separation, but in the profound union of complementary forces. ––––––––––

Artistry and Devotion from India

Handmade in India, this Ardhanarishvara statue is a testament to the enduring legacy of Indian craftsmanship and spiritual artistry. The tradition of bronze casting in India dates back millennia, with techniques honed over generations to create sculptures of unparalleled beauty and spiritual depth. Each stroke of the artisan's hand, each carefully rendered detail, from the divine crown to the intricate drapery, reflects a deep understanding and reverence for the deity. This piece is not merely a decorative object but a conduit for devotion, a focal point for contemplation on the fundamental principles of existence and the divine energies that shape our reality. Its presence can bring a sense of balance, harmony, and spiritual awareness to any space.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
