Ganesha: The Remover of Obstacles

Known by many names – Ganapati, Vinayaka, Pillaiyar – Lord Ganesha is one of the most beloved and widely worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. Immediately recognizable by his elephant head, large belly, and often playful demeanor, Ganesha embodies wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune. He is invoked at the beginning of new ventures, journeys, and ceremonies to ensure success and to remove any obstacles that may stand in the way. His image is a powerful symbol of auspiciousness, gracing homes, businesses, and temples across India and the world. Ganesha's origins are steeped in intriguing mythology. One popular tale recounts how Parvati, Shiva's consort, created Ganesha from the sandalwood paste she used for bathing. She tasked him with guarding her door while she bathed. When Shiva returned, Ganesha, not recognizing him, refused him entry. Enraged, Shiva severed Ganesha's head. Parvati was devastated, and Shiva, filled with remorse, promised to revive their son. He instructed his followers to bring back the head of the first living being they encountered facing north. They returned with the head of an elephant, which Shiva placed upon Ganesha, restoring him to life. This explains Ganesha’s distinctive elephantine appearance.

The Kirtimukha Throne

This intricately crafted sculpture features Ganesha seated upon a throne adorned with the fierce face of the Kirtimukha. The Kirtimukha, often translated as "Face of Glory," is a decorative element common in Hindu and Buddhist art and architecture. This monstrous face with gaping jaws is believed to ward off evil and protect the deity it adorns. It represents both destructive and protective energies and serves as a powerful symbol of transformation and purification. According to legend, Kirtimukha was a demon sent by Shiva to devour Rahu, who had dared to drink the nectar of immortality without permission. Impressed by Kirtimukha's devotion to his duty, Shiva commanded the demon to devour itself, leaving only the face, which he declared would henceforth adorn the entrances of temples and sacred places. Thus, the Kirtimukha became a symbol of the all-consuming nature of time and the cycle of creation and destruction.
