The undying image of Sheshanaga Vishnu. Shesha (translates to finitude) is the name of the naga (snake) that raises its spectacular hood above the crown of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu Himself is seated in lalitasana, nestled atop the coils of the body of Shesha. According to myth, Vishnu dreamed all of existence into being whilst fast asleep in the coils of Sheshanaga.

A slender, straight-cut sculpture. The regal stance of the chaturbhujadhari (four-armed) is enough to transfix the gaze of the truly devoted. He is clad in a dhoti wound tightly around His limbs, revealing rather than concealing the beauteous musculature underneath. Its silken pleats lie upon the intricately engraved skin of Sheshanaga’s coiled body.

Afore the quadrilateral double-tiered pedestal is a small lotus flower. The foot of the Lord’s pendant leg rests upon its soft belly. His handsome face is framed by a tall, densely engraved crown and layers upon layers of necklaces. Each of Sheshanaga’s five hoods in this iconography bears an expression of ferocity, set off by the lifelike engravings on the underside.

The Divine Respite: Lord Vishnu on Sheshanaga

Behold this exquisite brass statue, a magnificent representation of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the cosmos, in a posture of serene contemplation. Seated upon the coils of Sheshanaga, the primordial serpent, this masterful creation captures a moment of profound peace amidst the eternal cycles of creation and destruction. Lord Vishnu, with his multi-faceted eyes closed in meditation, embodies the ultimate tranquility that underpins existence. Sheshanaga, with its majestic, fanned hood extending protectively over the divine head, symbolizes the endlessness of time and the boundless energy that sustains the universe. This artwork is not merely a decorative piece; it is an invitation to connect with the divine, a conduit to the ancient narratives that have shaped spiritual thought for millennia. The iconography itself is rich with meaning. Lord Vishnu is the embodiment of sattva guna, the quality of goodness, purity, and balance. His resting on Sheshanaga signifies his transcendence over the illusions of the material world and his role as the cosmic consciousness that witnesses all. Sheshanaga, also known as Ananta, meaning "endless," represents the primordial force from which all creation arises and into which it eventually dissolves. In this posture, Vishnu is shown in his cosmic sleep, dreaming the universe into existence, a profound testament to his omnipotence and omnipresence. The multiple heads of Sheshanaga are often interpreted as representing the different faculties of consciousness or the vastness of creation itself.

This piece is a beautiful artifact, a blend of devotional intent and artistic mastery that speaks volumes of the rich cultural heritage of India. It serves as a focal point for devotion and a celebration of the divine artistry that has been passed down through countless generations. The choice of brass as the medium is significant. Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been used for centuries in India for religious iconography due to its durability, malleability, and its ability to hold intricate details. It is believed to possess auspicious qualities and is often used in rituals and for creating sacred objects. This statue, born from such tradition, carries within it the spiritual vibrations of its creation and the reverence it is intended to inspire.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
