An enchanting union of serenity and stunning movement, Kaliya-Krishna (Krishna dancing of Kaliya serpent) is one of the most beautiful and aesthetically rich artworks in classic Hindu art. This wooden statute of Kaliya-Krishna narrates the legend of Krishna’s victory over the serpent, on whose hoods the child god is majestically dancing, with one leg firmly placed on the hood and the other raised in the air, marking a graceful movement.

The tilt of Krishna’s head, his hand holding the tail of Kaliya, the positioning of his lower body, and the hand raised in Abhaya mudra, or gesture of fearlessness bring a celestial dynamism to the wooden statute. The grandeur of Kaliya-Krishna is enhanced by the halo with the Kirtimukha motif that surrounds the Lord and the anthropomorphic depiction of Kaliya near His feet, who folds his hands in Anjali mudra, a symbol of self-surrender and devotion.
