A rare image
of Shiva inspired by 11th-century Chola bronze, this statue presents
“Tripuravijaya”- the victor of three cities.
The legend of
Shiva-Tripuravijaya narrates that he aimed his three arrows at once, destroying
the gold, silver, and copper cities of Tarakasura’s three sons at once,
culminating in a ferocious battle.
Standing on the head of a stout demon, Shiva appears in a graceful pose, with his primary hands gesture of holding a bow and arrow, and secondary hands carrying Pashu (deer emblem) and goad.
In finesse, the bronze mirrors the beauty of classic Swamimalai statues. The Jatamukuta of Shiva, his meditative expressions, four-layered necklace, two-stringed Yajnopavita that flows like a stream on the Lord’s torso, Katisutra or waist belt and Kirtimukha emblem embellished short dhoti- every attribute of Tripurantaka Shiva is perfectly delineated, as if by the hands of the master-artist from the workshop of Chola kings.
