The Annam lamp or the Nachiarkoil Kuthuvilakku is a heritage of Tamil Nadu, India. The name comes from the town of Nachiyar Koil, where the Pather (Kammalar) community has been sculpting these gorgeous lamps for generations now. The Annam lamp is a traditional temple lamp found widely in South India.

The authentic Annam lamp is a four-part ensemble. The unmistakable hallmark of the Annam lamp is the hamsa (swan) motif which is to be found at the zenith of the stem. Zoom in on its richly detailed plumage and the rest of its form, which the sculptor has executed with superb precision despite the scale.

Fashioned from brass, the Annam lamp that you see on this page has a moderately long, somewhat thick stem. Its edges undulate with perfect symmetry, making for a curvaceous silhouette. The dia tray, which is located right at the foot of the hamsa and at the zenith of the stem, comprises five continuous mouths.

The Majestic Peacock Lamp: A Beacon of Divine Light

This exquisite brass lamp, standing at an impressive 24 inches, is more than just a source of light; it is a symbol of divine beauty, auspiciousness, and spiritual illumination. Crafted with meticulous detail from high-quality brass, its design is inspired by the regal peacock, a creature deeply woven into the fabric of Indian mythology and culture. The lamp's elegant form and radiant sheen evoke a sense of timeless grandeur, making it a captivating centerpiece for any sacred space or discerning collection.

Mythological Resonance and Cultural Significance

The peacock, revered in Hinduism, is often associated with the deity Kartikeya, the god of war, also known as Murugan. It is considered his celestial vehicle (vahana), signifying power, grace, and victory. In classical Indian literature and art, the peacock's magnificent plumage is seen as a manifestation of divine beauty and celestial splendor. The presence of the peacock motif on this lamp imbues it with these auspicious qualities, transforming it into an object of devotion and a conduit for positive energy. Beyond its mythological connections, the peacock is also a symbol of royalty and prestige, making this lamp a statement piece that speaks of refined taste and cultural appreciation. The tradition of oil lamps, or "deepas," holds profound significance in Indian households and temples, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and ignorance, and the ushering in of knowledge and prosperity. This lamp, with its striking peacock emblem, elevates this ritualistic practice to an art form.

Artisan Craftsmanship and Enduring Beauty

The lamp's construction showcases the skill of traditional artisans who have honed their craft over generations. The lustrous brass has been skillfully shaped and polished to achieve a smooth, reflective surface that captures and amplifies the light. The intricate details of the peacock atop the lamp, from its expressive eyes to its fanned tail feathers, are rendered with remarkable precision, a testament to the dedication and artistry involved. The lamp's substantial build ensures stability and longevity, promising to be a treasured heirloom for years to come. Its commanding presence, combined with its symbolic weight, makes it ideal for adorning altars, enhancing meditation spaces, or adding a touch of divine elegance to living areas. This lamp is not merely decorative; it is an invitation to connect with ancient traditions and to embrace the illuminating power of light.

The Power of Light: Understanding the Role of Oil Lamps in

Hinduism Hinduism is a boon to human society for it guides everyone to follow their Dharma and rise above the material concept of life. Hinduism is also known as “Sanatan Dharma”. These are Sanskrit terms in which Sanatan means “eternal” and Dharma means “Intrinsic nature or occupation”. Thus it deals with the intrinsic nature or the real identity of the living entities; that which can never be taken away from them. The principles of Hinduism are given in the Vedic literature or scriptures that are considered “Apaurusheya”; they have not been written by any ordinary person but have been compiled by Vyasadev, the literary incarnation of the Supreme Lord Krishna. The word “Veda” means complete knowledge, both material and spiritual. The knowledge in Vedic literature is so vast and precise that if one looks carefully, he will notice that nothing is sentimental or imaginary but is based on facts and truth. There is a clear description and information about the identity of all living beings, the nature of the Absolute Truth, the reason for the existence of this world, the information about the world beyond this universe, and the relationship between us and God, the Absolute Truth.

Why do we light a lamp?

There are many rituals recommended in the Vedas for engaging our body and mind in the service of God. One of them is the lighting of ghee or oil lamps before the deity. According to the Vedic injunctions, all auspicious functions begin with lighting a lamp. It has a great spiritual significance. It is believed that the light of the lamp symbolizes “knowledge”, the wick symbolizes the false ego of the living entity, and ghee (clarified butter) or oil symbolizes all the negative tendencies (Anarthas) accumulated in the heart such as greed, lust, anger, and envy. When the lamp is lit by spiritual knowledge, all the Anarthas are exhausted, and the false ego, which is the root cause of conditional life, is also burnt. Therefore, the lamp is lit before the Lord as a sacrifice of our false ego in His service. Just as the light of the lamp dissipates all darkness, similarly, the light of knowledge dissipates ignorance of the Jivas and enables us to realize our real identity and purpose of life.

Why only an oil or ghee lamp?

One may question why only an oil lamp is lit before the Lord and why not an artificial light source. This may sound logical but lighting a lamp has a further spiritual significance. The flame of the light in a lamp always burns upwards indicating that by cultivating spiritual knowledge, one achieves the highest perfection of life and is always victorious. Also, a traditional lamp is the purest form of offering.

In almost every house of a follower of Sanatan Dharma, an oil or ghee lamp is lit before the altar of the Lord or before the Tulsi plant. Some people light it at dawn, some at dusk, and some people prefer to light it at dawn and dusk. Either ghee or sesame oil can be used to burn the wick. Vaishnavas (devotees of Lord Vishnu or Krishna) especially light a ghee lamp every day in the month of Kartik to offer their love and devotion to the Lord.
