Baglamukhi: The Goddess of Stilled Tongues

Behold the commanding presence of Baglamukhi, the eighth of the ten Mahavidyas, supreme wisdom Goddesses in the Hindu Tantric tradition. Crafted with meticulous detail, this brass statue captures the essence of her formidable power and protective nature. Baglamukhi, also known as Valgamukhi, is revered as the Goddess who paralyzes enemies, silencing their speech and neutralizing their ill intentions. Her iconography is rich with symbolism. In this depiction, she is portrayed seated majestically, wielding a club in one hand to strike her adversary, while using her other hand to pull out the enemy’s tongue. The Tale of the Vanishing Storm

Legends surrounding Baglamukhi's origin are steeped in divine intervention. One such story tells of a great storm that threatened to destroy the world. Overwhelmed by the chaos, the Gods sought the help of Vishnu, who directed them to perform austerities at the Saurashtra region. Appeased by their penance, a golden lake appeared, from which Baglamukhi emerged. She calmed the raging storm, restoring balance to the universe and earning her title as the "Goddess who controls storms." Another narrative links her to the creation of the universe itself. According to this tale, the cosmos was once a void, devoid of form and sound. Baglamukhi, through her divine energy, created the first sound and form, initiating the process of creation and establishing the foundations of reality. Her yellow complexion is associated with the element of earth, signifying grounding and stability.
