The supreme Purusha and Prakriti, male and female elements fused and appeared in front of Lord Brahma when he was constrained by his imagination in the task of creating the Universe. This gave Paramapita insight into the fundamental principles of creation, which are that male and female energy is at the center of all creative actions and that it is from their union that the Srishti of Brahma emerges.

The sacred vision of Ardhanarishvara is shown in this brass statue. Shiva appears on the right half of the murti, while Uma, who lives on the left, is his Vamangi, or wife, animating the left half.

The two share an elaborate hairdo, towering and adorned by a crescent moon. Fine ornaments, Yajnopavita (sacred thread), belly belt or Udarbandha, and tiger hide and silk dhoti (lower body garment) adorn the ethereal androgynous form. Beauty and activity are felt in the upright pose, ornate garment, and gesture of Uma, while Shiva conveys the dormant male energy, both fusing as the muse of Brahma and his creation.

The Divine Union of Shiva and Shakti

Behold this magnificent brass statue, a striking representation of Ardhanarishvara, the composite and androgynous form of the Hindu deities Shiva and Parvati. This powerful deity symbolizes the fusion of masculine and feminine energies, the creative and destructive forces, and the inherent duality that pervades the universe. Crafted with exceptional artistry in India, this large-scale idol stands as a testament to centuries-old traditions of brass casting and devotional craftsmanship. The statue embodies the essence of Ardhanarishvara's divine union. The right half, representing Shiva, is typically depicted with a fierce yet serene countenance, often adorned with serpents and a crescent moon. The left half, representing Shakti (Parvati), emanates grace and beauty, often depicted with elaborate jewelry and a more feminine physique. In this particular portrayal, the artist has masterfully captured the subtle yet distinct features that define each divine aspect, highlighting the harmonious balance between them. The intricate details, from the elaborate headdresses to the finely chiseled garments and ornaments, showcase the skill of the artisan and the rich cultural heritage from which this piece originates. ––––––––––

A Symbol of Cosmic Balance and Creation

The concept of Ardhanarishvara is deeply rooted in Hindu philosophy, particularly in Shaivism and Tantra. It represents the idea that the universe is a product of the union of Shiva and Shakti, the primordial masculine and feminine principles. Shiva is the consciousness, the pure spirit, while Shakti is the primordial energy, the dynamic force that animates creation. Together, they are inseparable and form the totality of existence. This divine hermaphrodite is not merely a deity but a profound philosophical statement about the interconnectedness of all things, the complementary nature of seemingly opposite forces, and the ultimate unity underlying all diversity. It is believed that by worshipping Ardhanarishvara, devotees seek to achieve inner balance, harmony, and a deeper understanding of their own dual nature. The worship of this form is also associated with the pursuit of spiritual liberation and the realization of the self. ––––––––––

Exquisite Craftsmanship and Timeless Appeal

This Ardhanarishvara statue is more than just an object of worship; it is a masterpiece of artisanal skill. The warm, lustrous sheen of the brass brings the form to life, highlighting every sculpted curve and embellishment. The scale of this piece makes it a truly commanding presence, suitable for a prominent display in a temple, meditation space, or as a statement piece in a home dedicated to art and spirituality. The traditional techniques employed in its creation ensure its enduring beauty and authenticity. Each detail, from the expressive eyes to the delicate folds of the fabric and the symbolic attributes held in their divine hands, speaks of meticulous attention and devotion. Owning this statue is like bringing a piece of sacred Indian art and profound philosophical symbolism into your living space, a constant reminder of the divine balance and creative potential that resides within and around us.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
