Devi Saraswati is the Hindu procreatrix - wife of the procreator, Lord Brahma. Since it is impossible to sustain the procreation process without wisdom, intelligence, and power, the Goddess Saraswati embodies all three. Her dazzling personal beauty stands for the sheen of Her intelligence; the swan She sits on represents wisdom, given its virtue of being naturally disposed to filter milk from water; and Her four arms indicate Her supreme pervasion over all four directions.
She is worshipped as the goddess of learning and the arts, especially in Eastern India, where her annual ritual worship is cause for great festivities. She is hence depicted with a musical instrument, the veena (lute) so characteristic of Her. Both Her forearms rest on Her veena, while Her tender feet fondles a lotus. The resplendence of Her countenance is complemented by the rich inlay embellished on Her figure as garment and jewels. Even the swan has been inlaid with unspeakable taste and perfection. Note the inlaid mount atop which the pair is seated.
