The shashabhujadhari or six-armed roopa of Lord Ganesha. On the back of His vahana, the mouse, He stands, with a single foot pressed against the docile creature. The other leg is bent, the foot raised high in the air. Seated on the bent limb is Devi Siddhi, the little-known wife of Ganesha.

This Ganapati murti is a wood-carved sculpture of substantial proportions. It is a contemporary reproduction of the iconography which is part of ancient South Indian temple architecture. As such, it features a diverse colour palette. The pale colour of crushed lotus petals makes up Ganesha’s complexion, in direct contrast to Siddhi’s olive-coloured nakedness.

An archway of lotus petals, with a plateful of laddoos at the base of one of the pillars, frames the ensemble described heretofore. An imposing Kirtimukham motif is carved at the zenith of the archway. Without Kirtimukham, a composition such as this would be incomplete.

The Divine Remover of Obstacles

This magnificent wooden sculpture depicts Lord Ganesha, the beloved elephant-headed deity, in a commanding and benevolent pose. As the god of beginnings, wisdom, and the remover of obstacles, Ganesha is one of the most revered deities in the Hindu pantheon. This particular rendition, crafted from wood with evident artistry and a weathered patina, exudes a sense of ancient tradition and spiritual significance. The detailed carving showcases Ganesha's iconic form, symbolizing his power, intelligence, and auspicious nature.

A Throne of Cosmic Protection

Ganesha is seated upon a Kirtimukha throne, a powerful motif representing a lion's face, often seen as a protector against evil forces and a symbol of cosmic energy. The Kirtimukha, also known as "face of glory," is believed to devour anything that threatens it, thus safeguarding the divine figure it supports. The intricate details of the Kirtimukha in this sculpture suggest a master craftsman's dedication to imbuing the piece with both aesthetic beauty and protective symbolism.

The Humble Mooshika, the Steadfast Mount

Accompanying Ganesha is his Vahana, the mouse, or Mooshika. In Hindu mythology, the mouse represents the desires and ego that Ganesha has conquered. Despite its small size, the mouse is a powerful symbol of humility and the ability to overcome even the most insidious of internal obstacles. The way the mouse is depicted here, strong and steady beneath Ganesha's feet, illustrates Ganesha's mastery over all desires and his ability to navigate the complexities of life with grace. The elephantine head of Ganesha contrasts with the small yet significant form of his mount, a poignant reminder that true power lies not in brute strength, but in wisdom and self-control.

A Tapestry of Tradition and Devotion

This sculpture is more than just an object of art; it is a vessel of spiritual resonance. Its substantial size and the rich, textured wood lend it a commanding presence, making it a focal point for contemplation and devotion. The subtle hints of color that remain on the wood speak to a history of veneration, perhaps placed in a temple or a cherished home for generations. Owning such a piece is to invite the blessings of Ganesha into one's life, seeking his guidance to overcome challenges and achieve prosperity. This piece is a testament to the enduring legacy of South Indian craftsmanship and the profound spiritual narratives that have shaped the cultural landscape of India.
