Goddess Durga is a supreme deity and a personification of the vital energy that drives the world. Durga literally means undefeatable. Devi Durga is worshipped all over India and is associated with the idea that good always triumphs over evil. Her worship is also quite popular outside the Indian Subcontinent. She is a form of Shakti or Adi Parashakti, the primal energy of life. The Vedic texts tell the story that Devi Durga took this form to vanquish the buffalo-headed demon, Mahishasura.

Her serene graceful face evokes her motherly nature, a trait generally overshadowed by her ferocious power. She has eight arms holding a mace, a sword, a chakra, a conch, a trident, a bow and arrow, and a lotus. One of her hands is held in Abhaya mudra. She wears a traditional saree with necklaces, earrings, bangles, anklets, and a beautifully designed crown. Her wavy hair is spread loose, falling around her shoulders. She is known as Navadurga because of her nine different names. The festival Durga Puja is celebrated in her honor.
