Somaskanda or sa-with, Uma-Parvati, and Skanda-Karttiekya is an icon of Shiva popularized by the Chola bronze collections of Shaiva temple, where the composition was revered in the sanctum, as a symbol of the auspicious union of Shiva and Shakti.

This portable bronze icon follows the traditional iconography of Swamimalai sculptures while depicting Shiva adorned with a crescent moon and ornaments, accompanied by Devi Uma-Parvati holding a lotus.

In between his divine parents is Skanda or Karttikeya, who is a plump child, smiling innocently and beautified by his top-knot.

A fiery aureole surrounds this sacred image, extending from the lotus pedestal, sprouting from the mouth of Makara on each side, adding an architectural splendor to the small statue.

The Auspicious Trinity: A Somaskanda Bronze Masterpiece

This exquisite bronze statue captures the serene and loving essence of the divine family: Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and their son, Lord Skanda. Known as Somaskanda, this iconography is a powerful representation of domestic harmony, parental devotion, and the propagation of spiritual lineage. Crafted from high-quality bronze, this piece is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of India, imbued with devotional symbolism and masterful craftsmanship. The central figure of Lord Shiva, the destroyer and transformer, is depicted seated in a regal posture, exuding an aura of divine power and tranquility. Beside him, Goddess Parvati, the universal mother, radiates grace and maternal affection. The presence of Lord Skanda, the commander of the celestial armies, positioned between them, signifies the culmination of their divine union. Skanda, often depicted as a youthful and energetic deity, embodies courage, wisdom, and the power to overcome obstacles. This familial portrayal reflects the Hindu belief in the importance of family as a microcosm of the universe, where divine energies manifest in harmonious relationships. The artistry of this statue is evident in every detail. The figures are adorned with intricate jewelry and crowns, reflecting their divine status. The flowing garments, the subtle expressions on their faces, and the graceful postures all speak to the skill of the artisans who brought this sacred form to life. The entire composition is framed by a decorative, arched prabhah or aura, reminiscent of temple architecture and signifying the divine radiance surrounding the deities. This arch is further embellished with flame-like motifs, symbolizing spiritual illumination and the cosmic fire of creation and destruction that Lord Shiva embodies. The iconography of Somaskanda holds deep cultural significance. It is often associated with the worship of Shiva's creative energy and the auspiciousness of family life. In ancient Tamil literature, Skanda is celebrated as a beloved son, and the depiction of Shiva and Parvati with him highlights their roles as protective parents. The serene setting, with the deities seated comfortably, invites contemplation on the simple yet profound beauty of divine love and familial bonds. This bronze representation is not merely a decorative object but a sacred icon that can bring a sense of peace, harmony, and divine blessings to any space it graces.

A Symbol of Prosperity and Spiritual Well-being

Beyond its devotional significance, this bronze statue also embodies the principles of Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui, believed to attract positive energy and promote well-being. The inherent properties of bronze are considered auspicious, believed to resonate with protective and grounding energies. Placing this Somaskanda statue in your home or meditation space can serve as a constant reminder of the divine presence and the interconnectedness of all beings. It is an ideal piece for those seeking to cultivate a more spiritual and harmonious environment, fostering a sense of peace and prosperity within their lives. The timeless beauty and profound symbolism of this Somaskanda bronze statue make it a cherished addition to any collection, an heirloom piece that can be passed down through generations, carrying with it the blessings of the divine family.
