Touching the Earth: The Bhumisparsha Mudra

This handcrafted brass statue depicts the Buddha in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, also known as the "earth-witnessing" mudra. This sacred gesture is powerfully symbolic, representing the moment of Siddhartha Gautama's enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya. It signifies the Buddha’s unshakable resolve and his triumph over temptation and doubt. His left hand rests in his lap in the meditation mudra, symbolizing perfect balance and equanimity. The right hand is extended downward, fingers reaching towards the earth, calling upon the Earth Goddess, Bhumi, to witness his enlightenment. According to Buddhist legend, as Siddhartha sat beneath the Bodhi tree, Mara, the demon of illusion, sought to prevent him from achieving enlightenment. Mara unleashed his armies and temptations, attempting to distract Siddhartha from his meditation. Unwavering, Siddhartha touched the earth with his right hand, invoking Bhumi, the Earth Goddess, to testify to his countless lifetimes of virtue and merit. In response, Bhumi shook the earth, scattering Mara's forces and confirming Siddhartha's right to enlightenment.

Craftsmanship and Artistic Details

Crafted in India using traditional methods, this statue is a testament to the skill and devotion of the artisans who created it. The statue captures the serene and compassionate expression of the Buddha, inviting contemplation and inner peace. The brass medium lends a warm, golden hue to the figure, enhancing its spiritual presence. Notice the intricate details in the folds of his robe and the delicate rendering of his facial features. The carefully crafted ushnisha, the cranial protuberance on the top of his head, symbolizes his wisdom and spiritual attainment. The statue rests upon a lotus pedestal, a symbol of purity, spiritual awakening, and enlightenment in Buddhist tradition. The lotus grows out of muddy water, yet its blossoms remain pristine, representing the potential for enlightenment to arise from the challenges of life. The statue shows the beautiful blend of earthiness, and refinement to capture the pivotal moment of enlightenment.

A Timeless Symbol of Enlightenment

This statue is more than just a beautiful object; it is a reminder of the possibility of enlightenment and inner peace. Its presence in your home or meditation space can serve as a constant source of inspiration and encouragement on your own spiritual path. It is a tangible representation of the Buddha’s teachings on mindfulness, compassion, and the cessation of suffering. This handmade statue is a meaningful addition to any collection of Buddhist art or a thoughtful gift for anyone seeking to deepen their spiritual practice. It is a link to a rich cultural heritage and a timeless message of hope and liberation.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
