From the Vedic times, Surya (the rising Sun) instills energy, vitality, and positivity in the world, and has been revered as the supreme source of nourishment, which led to his description as “Surya-Narayana”, equated with Vishnu-Narayana who nourishes the Universe. In this marvelous bronze statue, Surya-Narayana is represented in the form he takes to invigorate the world in the morning. Enthroned on a golden chariot carried by seven horses and controlled by Aruna, the charioteer of Surya and the embodiment of the redness of the sky in the early morning, the divine Sun god appears in the form of the four-armed Narayana, holding the Shankha(conch) and Chakra (discus) in his secondary hands and making the gesture of Abhaya (fearlessness) and Varada (giving boons) with his primary hands.

In front of his lotus-shaped throne on the chariot is Aruna, holding the reins of the Ratha (chariot) and a whip, controlling the galloping horses. Sculpted masterfully, with fine details and a glistening polish that brings the aura of the Sun god in the murti, this Panchaloha icon is an artistic reverence of Surya-Narayana, the primordial sustainer of Srishti.

The Radiant Chariot of Surya Narayan

Bask in the divine radiance of this exquisite bronze statue, a testament to the ancient art of South Indian craftsmanship. Depicting Surya Narayan, the Sun God, in all his glorious majesty, this piece brings the power and warmth of the celestial sphere into your sacred space. Surya is a vital deity in Vedic tradition, considered the soul of the world, the source of all life, and the dispeller of darkness. Revered as the giver of light, knowledge, and vitality, he is prayed to for good health, success, and protection from all ills. The statue portrays Surya seated upon his magnificent chariot, drawn by seven spirited horses. These horses represent the seven days of the week and the seven colors of the rainbow, symbolizing the ceaseless journey of the sun across the sky. The intricate detailing of the horses, with their muscular forms and flowing manes, conveys a sense of dynamic movement and divine power. Surya himself is depicted with his characteristic attributes: four arms, each holding symbols of his dominion – often a lotus, a conch, a discus, or a prayer bead, signifying creation, preservation, and cosmic order. His benevolent gaze and serene expression invite contemplation and peace. ––––––––––

An Artisan's Masterpiece: The Lost-Wax Tradition

Crafted using the venerable Madhuchista Vidhana, or lost-wax casting technique, this sculpture is a true work of art. This ancient method, passed down through generations of skilled artisans in regions like Swamimalai, involves creating a detailed model in wax, which is then encased in clay. The wax is melted out (hence "lost-wax"), leaving a hollow mold into which molten bronze is poured. This laborious process, demanding immense precision and artistry, results in sculptures of exceptional detail and fluidity, capturing even the most delicate features. The use of Panchaloha, an auspicious alloy of five metals traditionally used in temple icons, further imbues this statue with spiritual significance and ensures its enduring beauty. The rich, warm patina of the bronze evokes the very essence of sunlight, making this a truly captivating piece.
