Lord Murugan's Brass Seval Kodi Flag signifies the triumph of good over evil. The roots of the flag may be traced back to Lord Murugan's victory against Soorapadman, a demon who, together with his brothers Simhamukha and Tarakasura, captured the three worlds. When Soorapadman faced Lord Murugan in battle, he saw he couldn't win, so he transformed into a mango tree. Lord Murugan sawed the tree in half, knowing the demon's ambitions. The two fragmented halves reunited instantaneously into a robust rooster and a peacock. Lord Murugan afterward selected the peacock as his chariot and the rooster as his flag.

Honoring Lord Murugan

In Hindu mythology, Lord Murugan, also known as Kartikeya, Skanda, and Subramanya, is revered as the god of war, victory, and wisdom. He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, a celestial commander known for his valor and divine knowledge. Murugan is often depicted riding a peacock and wielding a vel (a divine spear), symbolizing his power to overcome negativity and ignorance. Worshipping him is believed to bring courage, prosperity, and spiritual growth. His devotees celebrate him through various festivals like Thaipusam and Skanda Shasti, where his divine exploits are recounted and his blessings sought. This emblem holds deep significance in rituals and prayers dedicated to Him.

The Significance of the Seval Kodi

The flag associated with Lord Murugan holds a special place in South Indian religious traditions. It is a symbol of victory, courage, and divine grace. The inclusion of the rooster is filled with symbolism. In many ways the rooster signals the break of dawn, heralding the start of a new day. It represents new beginnings and the dispelling of the darkness. The rooster is a strong symbol in the life of Murugan, as the demon Surapadman was split in two by Murugan, with one half of the demon becoming a rooster that became Murugan’s emblem in the flag. As such, the flag serves as a constant reminder of his divine power and his role as a protector against evil forces.
