Devi Meenakshi of Madurai (patron deity) is the South Indian equivalent of the Devi Parvati of North Indian Hinduism and Bodhisattva Tara of Buddhism. She was the princess of the Pandya Kingdom of Madurai - eons ago, perhaps the 3rd or 4th century - and went to attain divinity. The murti of Her that you see on this captures the traditional iconography of Meenakshi of Madurai.

As the wife of Sundareshvara, as Shiva is known in the South, She is young and curvaceous, bounteous and fecund. Her feet are cradled by the pistil of a lotus-shaped plinth. She is possessed of four arms, each of which bears the same element and stance as Her iconography at Madurai.

This Meenakshi sculpture is made from pure brass, which explains the colour of deep molten gold. The way plinth and pillar and archway have been carved betray South Indian iconography as well as the unique regional workmanship.

The Embodiment of Divine Beauty and Power

This exquisite bronze statue captures the essence of Goddess Meenakshi, a revered deity in South Indian Hinduism. Her name, "Meenakshi," translates to "fish-eyed," a descriptor alluding to her beautiful, almond-shaped eyes. Legend has it that she was born with three breasts and three eyes, an auspicious sign that her destined husband would reject her if she still possessed these features upon meeting him. However, it was Lord Shiva, in his form as Sundareswarar, who finally won her love and caused her to lose the extra breast and eye. This statue, standing majestically within an ornate arch, portrays her in her divine form, a testament to her immense power and captivating beauty.

A Vision of Grace and Auspiciousness

The craftsmanship of this statue is truly remarkable. Goddess Meenakshi is depicted with serene grace, her posture upright and commanding. She is adorned with intricate jewelry that speaks of royal lineage and divine status. Her divine hands are held in specific mudras, each conveying blessings and protection. In one hand, she holds a lotus, a symbol of purity and spiritual awakening, while the other may be in a gesture of bestowing boons. The accompanying arch, with its detailed carvings and supportive pillars, adds a sense of grandeur and reinforces the sacred aura of the deity. This piece is a vivid representation of the artistic traditions of South India, where bronze casting has been a sophisticated art form for centuries, often used to create powerful and evocative representations of the divine.

A Symbol of Devotion and Heritage

The worship of Goddess Meenakshi is deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual fabric of Tamil Nadu, particularly in Madurai, where her famous temple stands as a marvel of Dravidian architecture. The annual Meenakshi Kalyanam (marriage ceremony), celebrated with immense devotion, reenacts her divine union with Lord Shiva. This bronze statue serves as a powerful reminder of these traditions and offers a tangible connection to the rich spiritual heritage of the region. It is a piece that can inspire devotion, bring a sense of peace, and add a touch of divine elegance to any space. Its robust bronze construction ensures its longevity, allowing it to become a cherished heirloom for generations to come.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
