A dancing peacock lamp to light up the special occasions of the finest home. It is a long-stemmed, exquisitely carved sculpture. A number of dia-trays branch out from the stem, with five wicks on each dia-tray. The number of dia-trays emerging from each level decreases up the stem. This makes for an ornate silhouette.

The numerous dia-trays are at the extremes of curvaceous vine-shaped tahaniya (branches). They are of varying lengths and density, depending on at which level of the stem they are. From the centre of each dia-tray rises a miniscule plinth. A peacock with gorgeous plumage is poised on this plinth. Each peacock at each point along the stem of this lamp is facing a unique direction.

The dancing peacock at the zenith of the stem is the most striking aspect of this composition. The front-facing bird stands with its stately neck at the very centre of a superbly carved canopy. Zoom in on this section of the lamp to appreciate the intricate handiwork and how uniform it is across every bit of the peacock’s plumage.

A Symphony of Light and Symbolism

This magnificent brass Annam lamp is a breathtaking testament to Indian craftsmanship and spiritual symbolism. Standing at an impressive 52 inches, it is not merely a source of light but a work of art that evokes a sense of grandeur and devotion. The lamp is meticulously handcrafted in India, a land where brass has been revered for centuries for its durability, luster, and auspicious connotations in religious rituals and everyday life. The intricate detailing and the sheer scale of this piece make it a focal point that commands attention and admiration.

The Majestic Peacock: A Divine Messenger

The design is dominated by the regal presence of peacocks, symbols of beauty, grace, and immortality in Indian mythology. In Hindu lore, the peacock is often associated with Lord Krishna, who wears a peacock feather in his hair, and with Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge and arts. The peacock's elaborate train is said to represent the myriad stars in the night sky, and its iridescent plumage symbolizes prosperity and good fortune. Here, the peacocks are depicted in a dance-like posture, their stylized feathers forming a glorious corona that crowns the lamp. Their watchful eyes and poised stances imbue the piece with a sense of divine sentience, as if they are guardians of the sacred light.

Branching Vines and Whispering Bells: Nature's Embrace

Embracing the central peacock motif are delicate, branching vines, intricately sculpted to mimic the organic beauty of nature. These vines weave their way through the structure, providing a framework for numerous lamps. Dotted along these branches are tiny, exquisitely crafted bells that hang suspended, ready to chime with the slightest movement, adding an auditory dimension to the visual spectacle. In many Indian traditions, bells are used to ward off evil spirits and to awaken the divine presence. The interplay of light and shadow cast by the many lamps, combined with the gentle tinkling of the bells, creates an atmosphere of serenity and spiritual awakening.

An Ensemble of Lamps: Illuminating Tradition

This Annam lamp is designed to hold multiple lamps, each one a miniature vessel of light. The arrangement of these lamps suggests a blossoming flower or a celestial tree, radiating light in all directions. The term "Annam" itself can refer to a divine swan, which in Hindu mythology is the vehicle of Goddess Saraswati and is also associated with purity and discrimination. The presence of smaller peacock figures adorning some of the lamp holders further reinforces the avian theme and adds to the richness of the design. This lamp is a perfect centerpiece for any sacred space, a grand Diwali decoration, or a statement piece for a discerning collector who appreciates the fusion of artistry, spirituality, and cultural heritage.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
