The transcendental dance of Shiva as Nataraja crossed boundaries of nation and religion from its inception, inspiring art of Southeast Asian nations to experiment with and evoke the artistic beauty of the dancing Lord. This handmade brass marvel is an amalgamation of Hindu and Buddhist iconography, with a prominence of Balanese features, suggesting an exchange of idiom between regions, resulting in the divine and unique aesthetics of the statue. On a lotus dances the eight-armed Nataraja, wearing an ornate crown instead of his Jatamukuta (hairdo with tresses).

Various ornaments adorn his youthful form, with an intricately made waistbelt and a beautiful garment whose tassels sway to convey heavenly movement. While the dynamism of the dancing Shiva reminds one of the Chola bronze Nataraja, the attributes in his hands- bell, Vajra, Purbha, and other weapons are Tantric-Buddhist in origin, making this sculpture an iconic moment in art, where Hindu, Buddhist, and Tantric traditions fuse in Shiva, who is the supreme being, the primordial Deva (Adi Deva).

The rich, aged patina of the brass enhances the dramatic posture and expressive features, making this idol a true masterpiece. ––––––––––––––––––––

Symbolism of the Dance

The Nataraja pose, seen in this exquisite statue, symbolizes the cyclical nature of the universe. Shiva's dance, known as the Tandava, is not merely a physical movement but a cosmic ballet representing creation, preservation, and destruction. With each of his multiple arms, he wields significant symbolism. One hand holds a flame, signifying destruction and transformation, while another may hold a drum (Damaru), the sound of which is believed to be the primordial vibration from which the universe arose. The raised foot symbolizes liberation from the cycle of birth and death, and the other foot rests upon a demon, representing the vanquishing of ignorance and ego. This deity's dance is the rhythm of existence itself, a continuous flow of energy that sustains and renews the cosmos. ––––––––––––––––––––

The Sacred Lotus Bloom

The Nataraja is depicted here poised gracefully upon a blooming lotus flower, a potent symbol in Hindu iconography. The lotus, rooted in muddy waters yet emerging pristine and beautiful above the surface, represents purity, spiritual awakening, and detachment. It signifies that even amidst the chaos and illusions of the material world, enlightenment and divine grace can be attained. The lotus base anchors this powerful deity, emphasizing his transcendence and ability to remain untouched by the ephemeral nature of existence, while simultaneously offering a foundation for the cosmic dance. ––––––––––––––––––––

An Heirloom of Devotion

This handmade brass idol is more than just a decorative piece; it is an artifact of profound spiritual significance, crafted with devotion and passed down through generations of artisanal tradition. The durable brass ensures its longevity, allowing it to become a cherished heirloom, a tangible link to the rich cultural and religious heritage of India. Whether placed in a home temple, meditation room, or as a striking statement piece, this Lord Shiva Nataraja statue will undoubtedly inspire awe, contemplation, and a deeper connection to the divine. Its presence is a constant reminder of the powerful forces of creation, destruction, and renewal that govern our universe.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
